In this concert, Almudena Ortega and José Okiñena will interpret the third series of songs by Father Donostia, which they recently recorded in the Kursaal. In this concert, we will hear an ensemble of popular songs written by Father Donostia between 1911 and 1953. We know those songs, but as they have been adapted for this interpretation, they harmonize the past and the present in a wonderful way.
For more than six years, the duet formed by the soprano Almudena Ortega and the pianist José Okiñena have been working together, singing lied and have always been successful among critical review and audience. Therefore, they have recorded three discs with songs by Father Donostia. The third one is the whole work for piano and voice by this author.
Father Donostia was an atypical figure in the Basque and Spanish musical scene of his times. His words have great melodic strength and elegance. He made stylised folklore-inspired songs and great symphonic choral compositions. He is compared to Ravel and Debussy.
