Divertimento is the title of the 4th temporary exhibition organized at the Chillida-Leku Museum. Gallery 4 of the Zabalaga farmhouse will offer small-sized works made for his personal enjoyment in moments of intimacy by Eduardo Chillida. This selection of works, collected from among his private circles, shares a small size and unusual technique uncommon in the artist’s career. This said, these works are a way of reconfirming the road followed by his sculptures, a way of researching, of probing into material.
The images of the exhibition demonstrate the intimate, private nature of certain moments, for instance, the acrylics have been hung in the same order as they did in Chillida’s studio alongside the photographs of Uztapide, Ansorena, Perurena, Barandiaran and the sculptor himself, proud to be composing the group. Others portray Eduardo Chillida’s spontaneous moments; relaxed, thoughtful, painting...
The exhibition basically consists of three kinds of work: oils, acrylics and porcelains.
Oils: Oil paintings made for his own pleasure. Diversions with himself (Self-portrait) and with the colours of the nearby landscape of the Molino de los Vados, Burgos.
Acrylic: Creations of tremendous intensity in which Chillida finds the two-dimensional response to dialectics with space, black and white, total black on the surface of the canvas.
Porcelains: Although not used in the same way as ceramics, this material seems to take Chillida back to Ancient Greece, to the intrinsic qualities of the material.
“There’s an enormous distance between the artist and the sculptor, separated by an all-changing third dimension.”
“I pruned the artist’s growth to achieve deeper concentration”.
